Yes, there will be spring

I don’t know who needs to see this, but nobody refuses delivery of the very first forsythia blossom on the entire bush.  Or in the entire world.

Seen at the Morosini Naval School. It’s probably way, way out of order. No shore leave for a month.

  1. Snowdrops and crocus may mean spring is on its way, but forsythia means there is no turning back now, even if there is cold rain. Always lifts my heart.

Contrary to folklore, there is no need to wait till March to pluck a few whips to force on the windowsill. It can be forced starting in November or December. When picked that far ahead of natural bloom time, it takes longer to bloom, but still blooms much earlier, when one’s hearts is most desperate.

Thanks for sharing that cheering photo!

    1. It certainly lifted my spirits, too, of course. I almost heard a tiny trumpet fanfare. Makes me begin to suspect that Wordsworth didn’t totally need an entire hillside covered with daffodils to go all poetic about them. I think he should have limited himself to one blossom.

  2. Why, thank you! I uprooted my own forsythia in favor of witchhazel, reasoning that I had “visual ownership” of all the others in the neighborhood. But in this frigid Boston weather there’s none other to be seen.

    1. I grew up in Ithaca, New York, a town absolutely smothered with forsythia. Naturally I was glad to see it, because spring. But of course it was too much and I secretly envied the people in Rochester, which (as I was told) was smothered in lilacs.

  3. My forsythia isn’t coming out to play yet. But my snowdrops are still lively, and the yellow crocuses around them are lovely beneath the catkins on my corkscrew hazel, and my winter flowering jasmine. I suspect the next day or two will show the daffs open out there, too.

  4. Wow! This week everything’s busting out all over! I seem to have a garden full of frogs again.
So lovely to keep seeing your posts and well-informed writings.
