This is a public service announcement to any of my rowing readers (or their rowing friends): The Vogalonga, scheduled for May 31, 2020, has been canceled. I don’t suppose this comes as a huge surprise.
So far the official website does not reflect that decision, so in case anyone was still holding out hope, you can put the hope back in its box, and stow it in the tool shed behind the garage.
I’m taking the liberty of writing this because some people have contacted me to ask what the status of the event might be. It’s also in the box in the tool shed.

That must be a really large box, in an immense toolshed! It’s amazing how everyday life simply unravels in a situation such as we are all facing. The University boat race here is cancelled this year as well – rather different, I know. I rather wish they’d face up and cancel the Olympics, too.
Keep sending us your sensible, helpful comments, please. Poor Venice. I’d guess all the hotels will have actually closed by now, have they?
All the hotels, as well as the restaurants and bars, closed several days ago — perhaps even a week ago. I’m beginning to lose track. It’s a tremendous shock for the owners, for the staff, and for the suppliers. Before long there will be crops to harvest — artichokes, peas, asparagus, all that wonderful spring produce. Not only is there now a shortage of workers to work in the fields, but without restaurants (and cruise ships), where will all this be sold? And for what price?
