Remember the mysterious girls on the vaporetto and their extraordinary hair? I’ll remind you:
They seemed not even to know each other, but the odds on their all meeting up on the morning school vaporetto run are incalculable.
But not many days later, we came upon extravagant tresses again. Who are these people?
The similarities between these damsels are too obvious to need comment, but I’m fascinated by the rebel in the middle. Not dressed in black! Short hair! She is clearly impervious to whatever strange force is directing the other girls. Lino, on the other hand, can’t stop marveling at the fact that they didn’t move over to make room for everybody to sit comfortably. Four people obviously together who all are fine with one of them just perching on the corner?
By all means, come to Venice to look at palaces and canals. But occasional glimpses of people here are sometimes more extraordinary than almost everything else.
Good Morning (in northern California)
The people who actually live in Venice make it the wonderful place that it is. I completely enjoy your perspective as a “local”. If people could understand the feeling of the real Venice that you write about they would have the perfect Venice visit. You have to go off the beaten path and not stick to the freeway of humans right around St. Marks!
Thanks so much for your viewpoint!!
Hysterical. I love this sort of people watching ~ unfathomable choices and behavior that harms no one. There is plenty of that to be had, if only we take the time to notice. Thanks for bringing the girls back for another discussion.
Oh yes! When I travel I like to capture s of people taking selfies or pics of one another, or taking pics of monuments. It is a great record of how others react to such places, their sense of self presentation, and sometimes a useful reminder of what never to wear. Best, though are starry-eyed newly weds who radiate happiness.
I can only presume that the girl with the shorter hair is growing it to the same length as her friends thus showing her individuality! I do so enjoy your posts and this one had me smiling!
Young people everywhere are so good at settling in to their surroundings in a natural way. Always good to think of another generation discovering the magic of Venice, even with all the publicity about too many tourists, etc.
Thank you yet again for your missives from Venice.
