I'm very glad to know that you survived and that you retain happy memories of that extremely demanding experience. Learning how to deal with waves is now a crucial part of rowing in Venice, unfortunately. This year's Vogalonga was the complete opposite, so shining and uneventful that I actually couldn't think of anything to say about it. Thanks for writing, your appreciation means a lot to me.

Hi Erla,

We met several times at Diadora for the Vogalonga. I used to work for a gondola company in Long Beach but now have my own with the largest fleet of boats from Venice in the US. Three gondole, a puparine, and a sandolo that can row valisana.
I rowed valisana for the windy Vogalonga of 2009, out of the GSVVM and across the lagoon to the city. As I rowed solo, nearer the city, waves in sets of three would come. The first would lift my bow then drop it into the bottom of the next wave then "prua di popa" the sacred waters would wash my feet. While getting water out with a sponge I missed the start. I rowed, mostly ALONE down the Grand Canal to the start. Everyone was gone, the Bacina empty, but the officials were kind enough to give me my medal. I will never forget that row and being the lone vessel on the Grande Canal.

Thank you for your writing. It is one more bit of salve, like my boats, that soothes a soul that burns for Venice.

Looking forward to more entries!
Ciao, Bepi
