I was struck by yet another illustration of the fact that Venice is not perfectly flat.  We were sloshing along in our hipwaders, while just beyond the gate there was high ground.

The owner of our favorite cafe didn't even try to keep the water out.  As she told us later, there's no point in putting a barrier across the door -- the water just comes in some other way.  In the case of the cafe across the street, jets of water were coming in through fissures in the wall even as he was pumping the water out.  This lady is here every day, reading.  Why let a little water ruin her perfectly fine routine?
