Our favorite patch of lagoon, between Sant' Erasmo and the Vignole, at a classic January low tide.  Here the vegetation is of the non-green variety, but it still reveals plenty of snacks for the birds.

The tide is still going out but the egrets have already started noshing.  Among other wonders in this scene are the half-submerged scallops known as pinna nobilis, or "noble pen shell."
